Awesome New Strategy Game Sequence – 5 to Win

Most strategy games can be too complex for young children or become one way to blow more stuff up. There are few classic games that allow kids and adults to play and truly stimulate thinking and strategy, 5 to Win is one of them. 5 to Win is a new strategy game available for download.

Although there are not a lot of flashy graphics, 5 to Win is seamless and allows for competition with the computer at multiple levels, based on the experience and maturity of the player. My kids have played it and love it. When I play it, I find myself being drawn into more games against the computer to try and improve my win rate.

5 to Win involves competing with the computer to be the first to have two 5 chips in a row to win. This involves strategically placing chips on the board and playing the odds of specific cards that will be drawn. There are 4 different levels from beginner to advanced and a new inventor mode, in which the inventor himself could only win 50% of the games. This level of strategy can be addictive, fun and is family oriented.

Both my 12 year old daughter and 8 year old son enjoy playing this game. They find it interesting, fun and challenging. It helps them develop memory and strategy thinking skills. My wife and I also enjoy this wonderful game. 5 To Win is truly a game that the whole family can play. I enjoyed it and I am sure you will too. I found the website informative and was easy to navigate. There is a trial version that was available and it was easy to purchase the game.

The game is cross between the strategy of chess and the fun of checkers or card games. It is easy to learn and within a few minutes you can be playing the game. The games themselves are not too long and keep you interested as you try to figure new lines to create.

I highly recommend 5 to Win as a great strategy game.

MISSION: ASTEROID, MYSTERY HOUSE and THE WIZARD AND THE PRINCESS (three adventure type games by On-Line Systems) follow the traditional two-word adventure game format, with one interesting exception. In addition to a text description you get a hi-resolution graphic view of the scenes. The gaming system is easy to learn with the program containing a basic vocabulary of some 300-400 words.

You give two word commands involving a verb and a noun and the computer responds with the appropriate actions. Though on the surface the system appears uncomplicated, the games themselves provoke a flurry of mental activity. All of your wits are needed as you encounter one problem after another. Solving particular situations may take you just a few minutes while others may take several hours (perhaps even weeks) to conquer.

Movement is totally in your hands as you command the computer to perform various actions. The colour graphics are superb, providing the amateur sleuth with surprises and entertainment galore.

MISSION: ASTEROID is the simplest of the group and only requires a few hours to solve.

MYSTERY HOUSE is considerably more difficult and provides many traps for the unwary in a wonderfully Victorian setting.

THE WIZARD AND THE PRINCESS has the best graphics and has a beautiful fairy tale setting as its theme. Of the three it was the most challenging and should be attempted only after you are familiar with the gaming system.

The only drawback to most “adventure” type games is the necessity of limiting commands to just two words. Many actions seem to require more words than are contained within the program’s vocabulary. However, if you experiment enough with different terminology, you can overcome this potentially frustrating experience. One hint to aid you in solving these adventures is to “get” any and all objects you can as they will come in handy at some point in time.

The “save game” command is a particularly useful feature. If you can solve these games in one sitting you are truly a master at puzzle solving. It will probably take many sittings and you may wind up being stumped at some particularly difficult point. Have no fear; ON-LINE SYSTEMS thoughtfully include a panic number which the hopelessly frustrated can call during reasonable daytime hours. My rating for this 3 in 1 game package is 2.5 out of 5.

Text Adventure Games: The Fun of Being Free

Non-RPG gamers need to face the facts; MMORPGs have taken over the world. They are big, they are immersive and they are drawing even the most unlikely people into their bright virtual universes. The figures are even more astonishing. U.S. gamers spent roughly $ 3.8 billion on massively multiplayer online games in 2009. The average paying MMO player – that’s 46% of gamers – parted with $ 15.10 per month to pick up their sword or throw on their armor. But what about the other 54%? Well, 25 million of us stuck to our free online games.

This seems like an alien thought to people who are willing to sacrifice their pay packet in their real lives to reap the rewards in their virtual ones. You can’t blame them, really. The top companies in the games industry are now household names because of the well-known MMORPGs they have created. A good money-making model has been showcased, and now it seems like every group of budding graphic designers with an internet connection between them is trying to push out the latest online adventure game. It’s good to know that the majority of us still understand that good things can come in… well… free packages. And a very strong contender from yesteryear is back in the race for the top spot; the online text game.

You may or may not know that online text games (text based RPG games in which the virtual reality is dictated to you in words rather than pictures) had a starring role in starting the online gaming scene. In 1975 computer enthusiasts started throwing together little text based games where your imagination could run wild. The idea of pay-to-play never entered their heads; they simply wanted to share an interactive world they had lovingly constructed with like minded enthusiasts. Text based RPG games (commonly known as MUDs) only grew bigger and better from there, the size of the universes expanding every day and the boundaries to what you can achieve stretching beyond sight. And now there are hundreds of text based games out there, the vast majority of them completely free, and many of them attracting surprisingly big crowds.

That ethos of sharing and creating never left the online text games scene. Each text based RPG game is like a huge book that changes with every action its players make. Together, the players will create a story. And it’s the absence of strict subscriptions, pricey add-ons and compulsory expenditures that spurs online text games onwards – players can come and go as they choose, dedicate as much as they like to the cause and the spirit remains about the experience rather than investing money. The text based games worlds continue with or without the players, evolving and existing indefinitely, just as they would if you could physically reach out and touch them. It’s this realism and depth that has kept players coming back to these text adventure games for more for decades.

This is not to say that pay-to-play games do not have their advantages, of course. Millions of dollars are invested into better graphics, new expansions and improved features every year – none of this could happen without the cash from your pocket. So, perhaps you do get more out of a game if you offer up your pay-packet? I like games where that aren’t too dark or lonely and like you have computer friends to work with, kind of like Beyond Good and Evil or Sonic Adventure for the dreamcast. Rating doesn’t matter, it can have mature content. I like a strong story and it has to be real time stuff.

Fun Board Games for Kids

There are many fun board games for kids other than Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders. You may not find them in your mainline department or toy stores. You most likely have to go to specialty game stores or look online. That little bit of extra effort though will reward you and your children (or grandchildren) with hours of enjoyment playing some really fun board games.

Looping Louie (also known as Bobbin’ Bumblebee and Barn Buzzin’ Goofy – same games, different themes) is a dexterity board game with lots of action. English editions call him Loopin’ Louie, for short.

A battery-powered tower rotates a boom with a small plastic airplane. When the plane spins around to you home area, you try to flip it out of the way using a level at your home base to protect your chicken chips from being stolen by Louie.

Chteau Roquefort is a fun board game that invites players to explore a castle with their mouse tokens. The mice are looking for cheese scattered about the corridors. Players spend action points to move their mice and pieces of the board to reveal or hide the pieces of cheese and trap doors in the floor.

Children will need to think about the effects of their moves before making them. They will also need to plan how to spend their action points wisely so they don’t run out before they accomplish all they wanted to do on a given turn. Many will enjoy the trap door effect when mice fall through the floor. Some may even like this site gag so much that they drop their own mice through a trap just for the giggles.

Animal Upon Animal is another dexterity board game that involves stacking wooden animals of various shapes and sizes (and colors). Think “Jenga” for kids. A steady hand is needed to stack these animals one upon another in a somewhat pyramid-shaped structure. If the animals tumble to the table on your turn, you must take back two of them to your own pile.

A special die is rolled to determine the placement of pieces and who gets to place them. Rules can be adjusted to suit the ages and abilities of the players. For example, instead of keeping only two animals after a crash, you could rule that the tumble-causer must keep up to five.

Gulo Gulo is yet another fun board game that requires dexterity. This one may actually favor the young one who have smaller fingers.

As you advance your Gulo character along the randomly-setup track, you must pick an egg (of the required color) out of the bowl. If removing the egg causes the alarm stick to fall out of the bowl (or if unwanted eggs drop out), your Gulo must go backwards.

Your goal is to reach the end of the track to rescue a baby Gulo found there. Bright colors, cute Gulos, saving the baby, and a very real chance at beating adults make this a fun board game for kids.

The Kids of Carcassonne is similar to the original Carcassonne in that the main mechanics include placing random tiles and setting meeples on top of them. Unlike the original, however, the sides of the tiles always match in this fun board game for kids.

The goal is to place all of your pawns, knowns as meeples, on the appropriate tiles before any of the other players. This makes for a shorter and simpler game than the original Carcassonne, which children may find too long and complicated or dull.

There is still some strategy required in this board game, though that too is more basic than what is found in any of the Carcassonne versions intended more for adults.
